DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS
We did something this month that I have been wanting to do for two years since we acquired the acreage next to our home: do a clean sweep and get ALL of the trash picked up along the dam.
Over the last couple of years we have randomly picked up the obvious trash, beer cans and such along the dam and in different places as we walked. You see, this property was not protected for a long time and people would drive on it to go fishing, hunting and mudding, tearing it all up to their hearts content. Once we put a fence up, at least that stopped for the most part. Like, how dare we take away their playground and dump? At any rate, when you live in the country, I don’t get what it is with people and dumping their trash and even a little bit of littering each time, adds up. It’s bad enough on the highway let alone on a persons property.
We picked up over 5 large feed bags full of beer bottles, beer cans, mostly crushed, 6 or more spray cans with hoses on the end of them, 2 gas cans, a chair and its deteriorating seat and back cushion, styrofoam pieces, a 5 gallon gas tank, bicycle wheel, plastic oil containers, plastic bottles, a pump sprayer, some shotgun shells… All that was just along the dam on each side. We went into the thick of the trees and brush to pick up what was either thrown in there or blew in from the wind. As for the lake side, we picked up what was left on the shore or drifted to the shore after being thrown into the water. We have about another 50 acres to go.
It’s not too difficult to take your own trash bag with you, especially if you are going to a state park or someone’s personal property. Heck, even if you are driving down the road, keep your trash to yourself please. You can always drop your little bag of trash at a gas station or just take it home and put it in your own trash can. Let’s keep Texas clean and keep our environment free from trash!
