Description
Did you know you can eat cactus?
I believe this is a species of prickly pear cactus but maybe not the kind that are grown commercially. The fruits are pretty small, but the pads could be eaten.
For thousands of years it has been a staple of Mexican and Central American diets. In some places in the United States it is considered an exotic, gourmet addition. It is also considered healthy. There are three edible sections on the prickly pear and the pad itself (nova) can be cooked like a vegetable. The petals of the flowers can be a eaten in salads and the pear (tuna) can also be treated as a fruit. They grow wild throughout the American southwest but also on both North and South American continents and up to Canada.
