Description
Painted plain air, is this gastropod fossil snail, Gyrodes major, that I found in the North Sulphur River. The gastropods that are black normally come out of what’s called the “red zone” of the Ozan Formation.
If I’m fossil hunting in the NSR and all I find are these, I’m a happy camper. A really nice one will go in the house in a jar, a bowl or on the windowsill. But I’m also glad to pick up the pieces that are broken. I like to put them with baculites and other black fossils between flagstone on our pathway to the front door!
