Description
Painted plein air, this was the very first mosasaur vert that I found in the North Sulphur River. It was several years ago before Ladonia Fossil Park became so popular. Even then, there were people leaving the river bed and I was in the middle of it walking the opposite direction when I looked down and saw it laying there on the surface. It’s as big as the palm of my hand!
No telling how long this marine reptile was, when it swam the Western Interior Seaway some 66 million years ago, give or take a few!
I was confused that people had been in the river and no one had seen it and picked it up. It just goes to show you that when you think there’s nothing left to find, there’s likely something other people missed.
Anyway, if I go with the intention of finding some big or “prominent“ fossil, I miss out on the greatest find of all, the adventure and solitude in the river. Likewise with painting, my journey is as important if not more important, than the destination.
