Description
However you say it, “goodbye”, “see ya later”, “later gator”, “good luck” or “don’t go”, this armadillo is going somewhere! When I saw this critter, it was on the side of the road on the way to the ranch and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to get its picture.
Armadillos are such an interesting nocturnal mammal. Some of their favorite foods are beetles, larvae, worms, termites, grasshoppers, ants, maggots and snails. They originated in South America and there are about 20 species of armadillos. Only the nine banded species made it to Texas and the Gulf Coast states. It can also be found as far north as Missouri.
If you see one in the daytime, consider yourself lucky!
